Making of Nature’s Voice

These pieces were ganged together for casting by Killerns Foundry in Rosebank Road - Thanks must go to Alex for her support, knowledge and mold-making.

Parent wax bird and bat forms. The mold for repetitions of the bat is shown.

The original Bosch-like creatures were made using wax and various forms of found natural items. The buttons were replaced with wax versions on the advice of the foundry, as burn-out can be toxic with them.

Sprued waxes prior to the ceramic shell development. There are two pieces of work shown here - one bat, one bird.

These sprue / vent setups are of the smaller pieces of Bosch-like creatures. The eyelets inside the sprues are set in the wax, for holding onto when the shell is applied. The little red knobs on the upside down set-ups shown, act as feet when the shell layers are applied, then as little ‘chimneys’ (with the shell opened temporarily for this) when burn-out is done.

Ceramic shell building - see more detail of this process in making: Unwitting Collusion. Shown is the final coating of ceramic material. Once fully dry, the molds are subjected to heat, to burn out the wax objects. The first two are birds and bats, while the other three contain multiple pieces of the Bosch-like creatures.
