Piwakawaka Cat Toy — Working at Scale

This large fibre-glass piece was an enlarged version of Unwitting Collusion from my exhibition of the same name. Re-named here as Piwakawaka Cat Toy, it was first exhibited at the Sculpture On the Shore event, and now resides on permanent display at the Kaipara Sculpture Garden.

Working out the shapes to scale.

Initial planning and model making, from the original, small, bronze piece.

Pattern work

Going from paper to fibre-glass construction sheeting.

Beginning fibre-glassing and structural elements.

Developing the structure with foam pieces and the welded steel frame that will support the bird as it hovers off the ground - as if just discarded.

Initial paint work.

Completed fibre-glass form being undercoated prior to automotive spray work.

Installing at the Sculpture on the Shore site. Rediscovered my loathing of the hole-borer. Cold, wet, mucky, but my son never complained, and I would have had difficulty doing the installation without his help. Note the watering of the grass - I made the mistake of cutting the grass a little too short, thinking it would grow…. it would have looked better in the longer grass anyway I suspect, in hindsight.
