E hara tenei I te korowai / This is not a cloak

2006
Whata aho rua Maori hand-weaving, feathers from goose, pheasant, guinea fowl and cockerel, timber, glass, brass

A tongue-in-cheek allusion to a pakeha weaving a korowai, with Matisse's This is Not a Pipe as a conceptual reference. The whole, in a museum case infers traditional preoccupations by  collectors and museums of taking taonga out of their proper cultural space, and transporting them into the 'exoticising' context of a collection.
